05/10/2020

Well, this week was a productive mess!

The following is more about life stuff, feel free to skip this.

I’ll let you know when it’s over. Promise

So you always know it’s going to be a great week when you start off with a phone call from your Mum telling you your Granny has been rushed to hospital with breathing difficulties, in the middle of a pandemic. Since then I’ve been receiving daily updates. Good news: not COVID-19, the bad news: It’s 'chronic obstructive pulmonary disease' with a blood clot in each lung – just for good measure. Since she’s not allowed visitors or anything sent in, there isn’t much I can do… which sucks to say the least.

Do you know what makes anyone’s week a tad chaotic? Their partner having a massive communication mishap and almost ending up homeless. Thankfully, Kelsey and I have a top tier letting agency who said he could move in. As good as that is, it does mean that my tiny single person bedroom/workspace is now occupied by two people and double the amount of belongs. Thank goodness I at least had a queen-size bed (that fills 90% of the room.) Unfortunately, this took up a lot of my week. However, I think making sure someone isn’t homeless is a little bit more important than writing.

Oh yeah, I’m also now having to go back and forth to the hospital because my ears and throat have decided to give up. Being given the doctor's orders of “No shouting, whispering, singing, or any non-emergency talking” is making class group discussions really interesting… AND on the 23rd I'm off to get an MRI to make sure I don't have any tumours in my left ear or, y'know, the left side of my brain.

All this happening in the span of 5 days leads to me being MASSIVELY behind where I was aiming to be.

That’s the life update over, now to the actual work!

Spit-ballin', ideas, and Changes

Kelsey and I got together to discuss how things were going and where we wanted to be going. Since the last meeting about work, we had both had more thoughts on the show and potential scenes/future scenes. As someone who is forever coming up with dumb bits, I had a few B plot ideas. Obviously, we don’t expect to make an episode with both an A and B plot for a long time, however, we could maybe use a part of this plot to make up a little skit.

The idea:

  • The high school has a yearly 1st-year disco, the kind where you pay 50p for a juice box and the DJ hits you with the Cha Cha Slide while you're down the corridor in the bathroom. This annual disco is always had the same teacher DJ-ing (let's call them Carl for ease of explaining), but this year the new substitute teacher (Alexander) wants to give being the DJ a shot. Carl isn’t willing to give up his position that easily though which leads to DJ composition being held. Alexander, who has never been a DJ before is on the verge of giving up before he’s even tried. He is then approached by another teacher who offers to train him in the way of the children's disco DJ. This teacher is an old man in a wheelchair with a strong Scottish accent who used to be the School’s go-to DJ, however, after a suspicious accident, he was left wheelchair-bound and unable to DJ… This leads to a Rocky-like training montage where the old teacher teaches Alexander all the typical dances and music cues. After some hardcore DJ training, Alexander then goes against not only Carl, but other teachers who decided to accept Carl’s challenge. One by one, all the other teachers make mistakes in the dances and with the tech, until it is just Carl and Alexander.

I haven’t decided who would win yet, or if it is revealed that Carl was responsible for the old teacher’s accident before he does the same to Alexander.

Minor side note; the reason he’s called Alexander is due to this bit started by me stating that adding the name “Ali” after any word makes it sound more Scottish, especially if said in a heavy Scottish accent. So, after some joking back and forth about this with my partner, this whole bit started to come together.

Kelsey agrees this would be a fun B plot, and It was then they told me exactly why they had an issue with the name “Imagine Harry.” Although Harry was the key quirk to the show’s main premise, since we’ve been expanding on storylines, we’ve not once come-up with one based around Harry… While we don’t want to get rid of Harry, Kelsey did make a good point about changing the title to focus more on the twins.

When trying to come up with names related to the twins, I asked if they had a last name for the twins and Taylor yet, and they didn’t yet. They said they wanted to come up with a ridiculously Scottish last name for them, which I jokingly yelled “MC’DOUGALL!” and we tried titles with a mock family name. However, there wasn’t a title we could come up with using their surname that didn’t sound like a cheesy family sitcom. I brought up a name for a live-action show idea, “Child-Like Mind”, which Kelsey liked but I wasn’t ready to give to another project. We then started exploring ideas like “twin connection”, “Likewise”, and “Same Waveline” - because I forgot the correct phrase “Same wavelength.” However, my mistake lead to Kelsey coming up with “Twin Line” as the current new show title. It’s more than likely to change though since we’re both are extremely indecisive.

Thought process and naming

We also finally gave a name to the Drag Queen character, and we already know our lecturers will hate this process however, this is genuinely how 99% of our decisions have been made so far.

However, if you want some deeper meaning as to how I was inspired to come up with Douglas Dougal; then let me tell you about the glasses frame I was browsing that day...

Bare-Bones of writing

I used the lines we knew both really wanted to be in this scene as a starting point, as well as the storyboards I quickly got out. Getting ideas out of my head, especially during this hectic week, is something I greatly struggle with. So I started looking over everything I had to hand to help me get out my thoughts however I could.

I tried to get things out physically on post-it notes and scribbling out any little thoughts. Nothing felt like it made sense to me. It just felt disorganized, until I started doing things digitally.

Now having the writing software from last week somewhat figured out, I decided to use the cards function to try getting out my ideas in order. Some ideas were very rough while some were in so vivid in my mind, right down to the type of shot. Regardless, I was actually able to get out some bare-bones of a scene.

After getting the go-ahead from Kelsey, I plan to have the first draft by the middle of next week!

(provided I don’t have another crazy week.)
